About this course

Photography in editorial and advertising contexts demands a distinctive combination of technical excellence and commercial awareness. Editorial photography tells stories for publications, documenting people, places and events with the clarity and impact that a strong visual narrative requires; advertising photography creates images that persuade, associating products and brands with moods, aspirations and values that speak to target audiences. Both require mastery of studio and location technique, lighting, post-production and the ability to understand and respond to a brief. At the University of Gloucestershire, this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year, giving you additional technical and creative preparation before the main degree begins. You will develop your photographic skills in professional studio environments using industry-standard equipment, working across both editorial and advertising genres from fashion and portraiture to product and still life photography. The foundation year establishes your technical and conceptual foundations, and the main degree develops these into a professional practice capable of operating in commercial contexts. The critical and contextual dimensions of the programme develop your understanding of the history of photography, visual culture and the commercial industries in which you will work. Portfolio development is central throughout, as the portfolio is the primary means by which photographers gain employment in both editorial and advertising markets. A typical entry tariff of around 120 points is expected. Graduates work as commercial photographers, studio photographers, retouchers, photo editors and visual content creators across advertising agencies, publishing companies, fashion brands, PR firms and digital media organisations. Many pursue freelance careers that combine both editorial and advertising commissions, and the technical training and industry connections developed during the degree are the foundation for building that career. Some graduates also move into art direction or visual communications roles where their photographic background is a significant asset.
