BA Photography
About this course
Photography is a discipline that sits at the meeting point of art, technology, and communication. Since its invention in the nineteenth century, the photographic image has transformed how people document reality, express ideas, and shape culture. Today photography permeates every dimension of visual life, from photojournalism and documentary work to fine art, advertising, and the vast digital visual economy of the internet. Studying it at degree level means learning to see with intention, to understand light and composition as a language, and to situate your own practice within a rich critical and historical tradition. At Edinburgh Napier University, this four-year programme develops both your technical capabilities and your conceptual thinking. You will learn to work confidently with photographic equipment and processes, understanding how different approaches, whether analogue or digital, create different kinds of images and meaning. You will study the history and theory of photography, exploring how images have been used and understood across different contexts and periods, and you will critically engage with contemporary photographic practice. The programme encourages you to develop a distinctive personal voice and to approach your creative work with rigour and self-awareness. Edinburgh's cultural richness and its strong creative industries sector make it a particularly stimulating environment for this kind of study. This full-time programme runs over four years and includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience a different educational and cultural setting that can significantly deepen and challenge your creative practice. Graduates in photography go on to careers as professional photographers working in editorial, commercial, documentary, or fine art contexts, as well as in related roles in picture editing, curating, arts administration, education, and the broader creative and media industries. The visual literacy, technical skills, and critical thinking developed through the programme have value across a wide range of contemporary careers.
