About this course

Philosophy and sociology approach questions about human social life from different but complementary angles. Philosophy asks foundational questions: what do we know and how do we know it, what makes actions right or wrong, what is justice, and what is the nature of the mind and of society? Sociology examines empirically how societies actually work: how they generate inequality, how norms and institutions shape behaviour, and how social change happens. Together, they provide both the conceptual rigour to ask precise questions and the empirical frameworks to investigate how those questions play out in real social life. At York you will study philosophical ethics, epistemology, political philosophy, and the philosophy of mind alongside sociological theory, research methods, and the study of inequality, culture, and social institutions. Philosophy develops your capacity for careful argument and your sensitivity to the assumptions that underlie our beliefs about society and morality. Sociology develops your ability to understand social structures and to work with evidence about how they operate. The combination makes you a more rigorous sociologist and a more socially grounded philosopher, and it produces graduates with a distinctive analytical range. The three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you professional experience in a relevant context and international exposure during your studies. Graduates pursue careers in social research, policy, the civil service, journalism, education, the voluntary sector, law, and a wide range of other professional contexts where analytical thinking and an understanding of social dynamics are valued. Many students continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, sociology, ethics, social policy, or related fields.
