About this course

Philosophy and Italian make an unusual but genuinely rewarding combination, connecting the systematic study of argument, knowledge and value with the linguistic and cultural heritage of one of Europe's richest intellectual traditions. Philosophy asks enduring questions about the nature of reality, what we can know, what we ought to do and what counts as art or justice. Italian opens access to a language and culture that has shaped Western thought from Dante and Machiavelli to Gramsci and Calvino, and combining both gives you a global perspective on universal themes that you can pursue in their original linguistic and cultural contexts. At the University of York, this four-year programme allows you to explore the enduring questions that have shaped societies and cultures while developing your Italian to a high level of proficiency. You will study core areas of philosophy, including ethics, epistemology, logic and political philosophy, while your language study develops your reading, writing and speaking across contemporary and classical contexts. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you time at an Italian or other international institution where you can deepen your language skills and experience philosophical study in a new academic environment. A sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities are also features of the degree. The combination of philosophy and Italian produces graduates with exceptional critical thinking, communication and analytical skills alongside genuine linguistic competence. Common career destinations include law, education, journalism, public policy, international organisations, the civil service, media and arts administration. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, Italian studies, political philosophy or a related humanities discipline. The ability to work across languages and traditions is a practical and intellectual asset in an increasingly connected world.
