BA Philosophy
About this course
Philosophy is the pursuit of clarity, rigour, and depth in thinking about the questions that matter most. From the nature of reality and the limits of knowledge to the foundations of ethics and the meaning of justice, philosophy has been asking the hardest questions about human life and the world for thousands of years. As Keele University describes its own programme, students move from ethics to religion and the ultimate nature of reality on a journey driven by a passion for understanding and analysing philosophical ideas from ancient India and Greece to the present day. It is a discipline that trains you not just to accumulate views but to examine them honestly, identify assumptions, and think more clearly. Keele's three-year full-time Philosophy BA has a typical entry tariff of 104 points and includes a sandwich year, a year abroad option, and work placement opportunities. You will develop into a well-rounded critical thinker, analyst, and communicator, as the course itself puts it, engaging with the major traditions of Western and non-Western philosophy alongside contemporary debates in ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, political philosophy, and philosophy of mind. The sandwich year and placement opportunities give you the chance to apply your skills in a professional context before graduating, demonstrating the practical value of philosophical training to employers across diverse industries. Philosophy graduates are among the most versatile in the graduate jobs market. The ability to identify assumptions, construct clear arguments, and evaluate evidence carefully is valued in law, public policy, management consultancy, the civil service, journalism, technology, healthcare ethics, and education. The rise of artificial intelligence and data science has made philosophical questions about technology, consciousness, and moral responsibility more practically important than ever. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, law, or applied ethics, or proceed to professional qualifications in areas where analytical rigour is at a premium.
