About this course

Philosophy is the systematic attempt to reach clear, reasoned answers to fundamental questions about knowledge, reality, morality, mind, science, and what it means to live well. It is the oldest academic discipline and, in many respects, the one that underpins all the others, because it is philosophy that examines the foundations of reasoning itself. Studying philosophy trains you to identify assumptions, evaluate arguments with care, and maintain precision in the face of genuinely difficult questions where easy answers are not available. This four-year, full-time programme at the University of Glasgow leads to a Master of Arts with Honours, the standard Scottish undergraduate degree. You will study across the major branches of the subject, including epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of mind, and logic. The year abroad is a significant feature of the course, allowing you to study philosophy in a different academic tradition and to encounter approaches and thinkers that may not be central to the UK curriculum. Glasgow's philosophy department is one of the strongest in Scotland, with research strengths across both the analytic and continental traditions. Philosophy graduates are notable for their employability across a very wide range of fields. The skills of argumentation, critical reading, and precise writing that the degree develops are directly applicable in law, public policy, journalism, management consulting, finance, the civil service, and technology. Ethics expertise has become increasingly sought after as organisations grapple with questions about AI, data, and corporate responsibility. Many philosophy graduates also pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, law, politics, or interdisciplinary fields, and the discipline provides particularly strong preparation for academic careers in the humanities.
