About this course

Philosophy is the discipline of careful, systematic thinking about the most fundamental questions we can ask: what exists and what is its nature, what we can know and how, what makes actions right or wrong, how language relates to the world, what makes a good life, and how political authority is justified. It is a discipline that takes nothing for granted, subjecting to critical scrutiny the assumptions that other disciplines and ordinary life routinely rely on. Studying philosophy develops analytical precision, the capacity to construct and evaluate arguments, and the ability to engage with ideas that resist easy resolution. At Dundee you will study this four-year full-time programme, with a year abroad providing the opportunity to encounter philosophy in a different institutional and cultural context. Across the four years you will explore the major traditions of philosophy, from ancient Greek thought through the great rationalist and empiricist debates of the early modern period to twentieth-century analytic and continental philosophy. You will engage with the central questions of metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, and the philosophy of mind, developing your ability to read difficult texts with precision, to construct your own arguments in writing and discussion, and to hold your own against philosophical challenge. Philosophy graduates are among the most versatile in the job market, precisely because the skills they develop, rigorous argument, clear writing, careful reading, and comfort with abstraction, are valued across many sectors. Careers in law, finance, the civil service, journalism, management consultancy, policy, teaching, and technology are all common destinations. The ability to think clearly under pressure and to make well-reasoned decisions is an asset in virtually every professional context. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, pursuing an MA or PhD in areas such as ethics, political philosophy, logic, or the philosophy of science.
