About this course

Philosophy is the systematic pursuit of clear answers to the most fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, ethics, and human nature. It asks how we know what we think we know, what it means for something to be real, how we should live and treat one another, and what makes an argument valid or an action right. Unlike many disciplines, philosophy does not have a fixed subject matter but rather a method: the careful and disciplined use of reason and argument to examine questions that resist easy resolution and that illuminate everything else we study and do. At the University of Sheffield, one of the UK's strongest philosophy departments, you will study philosophy over three years full-time, engaging with both the history of the discipline and its contemporary cutting edge. A foundation year is available for students who would benefit from additional academic preparation before the main degree. The programme covers ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, the philosophy of mind, political philosophy, and the history of philosophy from ancient Greece to the present, and you will develop your own philosophical voice through essay writing, seminar discussion, and the construction and evaluation of arguments. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement provision, giving you professional experience and international exposure before you graduate. The typical entry tariff is 136 UCAS points for direct degree entry. Philosophy graduates are among the most versatile of all graduates, precisely because the skills the discipline develops, rigorous critical thinking, the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments, and comfort with genuinely difficult questions, transfer across an enormous range of careers. Law, the civil service, journalism, management consultancy, finance, education, public policy, and academic research are all common paths. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, law, politics, or related disciplines.
