BA Philosophy, Politics and Economics
About this course
Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford is one of the most celebrated degree programmes in the world, built on the conviction that studying the great modern works of economic, social, political, and philosophical thought has a transformative effect on students' intellectual lives and on their capacity to engage with the world's most important questions. The three disciplines address complementary dimensions of the same fundamental challenge: how should human societies be organised, how do they actually work, and what tools do we have for thinking rigorously about both questions? Philosophy develops the analytical and conceptual precision to examine arguments, identify assumptions, and think clearly about ethics, knowledge, and the foundations of political and social theory. Politics provides the empirical and theoretical understanding of how power is organised and exercised, how institutions function, and how political change occurs. Economics equips you with the quantitative and analytical tools to understand how scarce resources are allocated, how markets and incentives shape behaviour, and what the consequences of different policies are for welfare and distribution. The combination of these three disciplines in a single degree, with Oxford's tutorial system providing intensive intellectual engagement with experts, produces a genuinely exceptional intellectual formation. The programme includes a foundation year for those who need additional academic preparation. PPE graduates have an extraordinary record of entry into public life, including politics, the civil service, the judiciary, journalism, finance, international organisations, and academia. The analytical, argumentative, and leadership capabilities the degree develops are valued across virtually every field in which complex decisions with significant consequences are made. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in politics, economics, philosophy, law, or public policy.
