About this course
Philosophy, politics, and economics is one of the most demanding and versatile degree combinations in British higher education. Philosophy develops the tools of rigorous argument and conceptual analysis, asking foundational questions about knowledge, ethics, and rationality. Politics examines how power is organised, contested, and exercised in societies, from the local to the global. Economics analyses how individuals and institutions make decisions about resources, and how those decisions aggregate into the patterns of growth, inequality, and crisis that define economic life. Studied together, the three disciplines illuminate each other in ways that none could achieve alone. At the London School of Economics, this four-year full-time programme keeps all three subjects in play for the first three years, resisting the premature specialisation that reduces the subject in other institutions. You will engage with fundamental philosophical questions, analyse how political ideas are formed and contested, and examine the challenges and dynamics of economic systems. In the final year, PPE students complete independent research and work with external organisations through an innovative Capstone course, bridging academic analysis and real-world application. The programme also includes a year abroad option, adding an international dimension to a degree already defined by global thinking. The typical entry tariff is 216 UCAS points. Graduates of PPE programmes, particularly from LSE, are exceptionally well placed for careers in public policy, the civil service, finance, international organisations, political research, journalism, academia, law, and management consultancy. The discipline has produced an extraordinary number of influential figures across government, business, and the media, and the combination of analytical depth and breadth of perspective the degree develops makes graduates effective in virtually any arena where ideas, power, and resource allocation intersect. Postgraduate study in economics, political science, philosophy, or law is a natural next step for many.
