About this course
Philosophy and politics are disciplines with a long history of mutual influence and a natural intellectual affinity. Politics without philosophy tends to reduce to description and tactics; philosophy without politics loses sight of the real stakes of ideas about justice, power, and how societies should be organised. Studied together, they offer a rigorous and genuinely demanding education in the foundations of political life, the ethics of governance, and the arguments that underpin democratic and non-democratic systems alike. At Southampton this four-year programme, which includes a year abroad as part of its structure, is designed so that compulsory modules build a solid grounding in both subjects before optional modules allow you to pursue your particular interests in greater depth. In philosophy you will study areas such as ethics, political philosophy, metaphysics, epistemology, and the history of ideas, including exposure to ancient Greek philosophy and its continuing relevance. In politics you will examine theories of the state, comparative political systems, international relations, and contemporary policy challenges, with optional topics ranging from international relations to crises of twenty-first century democracy. The year abroad is integral to the programme's four-year shape, taking you to a partner institution where you will study for an academic year in a different educational and cultural environment. This experience adds real depth to your understanding of how political systems and philosophical traditions vary, and how ideas travel across contexts. Throughout the degree you will develop skills in argument, close reading, written analysis, and the ability to hold competing perspectives in tension, capacities that are valuable well beyond academic life. Graduates of philosophy and politics programmes move into careers in law, policy, the civil service, journalism, international organisations, NGOs, advocacy, politics itself, research, and the charity sector. Many also continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, political theory, law, or public administration.
