BA Philosophy and Politics
About this course
Philosophy and politics is a combination with a long and distinguished intellectual history, uniting two disciplines that both ask fundamental questions about how human life should be organised, what counts as justice, how power should be distributed and exercised, and what we can know about the social world. Philosophy provides the tools of rigorous conceptual analysis and argument, examining the foundations of knowledge, ethics, political obligation, and the nature of justice. Politics applies these frameworks to the empirical realities of government, institutions, ideology, and public policy, drawing on theory and evidence to understand how political systems work and how they can be made more just. At the University of Manchester, this three-year full-time programme is described as ideal for those who want to keep their options open or study specific topics, such as race, class, crime, or religion, from a variety of different perspectives. You will engage with both the analytical traditions of philosophy and the empirical methods of political science, developing the capacity to move between abstract argument and concrete analysis. The programme develops skills in logical reasoning, textual interpretation, political analysis, and the construction of evidence-based arguments, preparing you to think rigorously about the most important questions in public and intellectual life. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at one of the UK's leading universities. Graduates pursue careers in the civil service, policy analysis, law, journalism, think tanks, politics, international organisations, academia, finance, management consultancy, and the many other fields that value clear analytical thinking and rigorous communication. The combination of philosophical depth and political knowledge is particularly prized in roles requiring careful reasoning about policy, ethics, and social change. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in philosophy, political science, law, or public policy.
