BSc Philosophy and Physics
About this course
Philosophy and physics is one of the most intellectually ambitious degree combinations available, bringing together the discipline that asks the most fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, and value with the science that investigates the deepest structure of the physical world. The two disciplines have always been in dialogue: the philosophy of science, the interpretation of quantum mechanics, questions about time, causation, and the foundations of physical theory are areas where physics and philosophy genuinely need each other. At the University of Durham this three-year full-time programme develops both disciplines to a serious level in parallel. In physics you will cover classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics, thermodynamics, relativity, and contemporary topics in particle physics and cosmology, developing the mathematical rigour and physical intuition that characterise physics education. In philosophy you will engage with metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of science, ethics, and the philosophy of mind, developing the analytical precision and argumentative discipline that the subject demands. The overlap between them, particularly in areas like the philosophy of physics, foundations of quantum theory, and the nature of scientific explanation, gives you genuinely interdisciplinary territory to explore. The programme includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you professional experience and international academic exposure alongside your studies. Graduates go on to careers in research, technology, finance, data science, consultancy, academia, journalism, public policy, and law. The combination of mathematical sophistication and philosophical depth is valued across many demanding professional contexts. Many continue to postgraduate study in physics, philosophy, philosophy of physics, or data science.
