BA Philosophy and Linguistics
About this course
Philosophy and linguistics is a pairing of remarkable intellectual coherence, united by a shared concern with what language is and how it works. Philosophy of language is one of the central areas of modern philosophy, asking how words refer to things in the world, how sentences carry meaning, how context shapes interpretation, and what the relationship is between language and thought. Linguistics approaches these questions empirically, studying the structures, patterns, and variations of language as they actually occur, in speech and writing, across communities and historical periods. Together, they give you both the rigorous conceptual tools and the empirical grounding to think about language with unusual depth and precision. At the University of York, this three-year full-time programme develops your capacity for careful philosophical thinking alongside your understanding of linguistic structure and method. You will engage with central areas of philosophy, including epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and philosophy of mind, learning to construct and evaluate arguments with precision and to engage with major philosophical texts and debates. Your linguistics studies will cover phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, giving you the descriptive and analytical tools to examine how language is organised and how it functions in communication. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you significant professional and international experience before you graduate. You will develop exceptional analytical thinking, strong writing skills, the ability to handle abstract material with precision, and a distinctive perspective on communication that is valuable in many professional contexts. Graduates go on to careers in law, policy, journalism, education, technology, human-computer interaction, speech and language therapy, and a wide range of roles where the ability to think and communicate with precision matters. Postgraduate study in philosophy, linguistics, or natural language processing is a common route for those wishing to specialise.
