BA Philosophy and History with Year Abroad
About this course
Philosophy and history make natural companions. History provides the record of what humans have done and the contexts in which ideas have arisen, while philosophy supplies the conceptual tools to question what those events mean and whether the frameworks we use to interpret them are coherent. Together they train you to move between evidence and argument, to hold complexity with care, and to write with precision about subjects that resist simple answers. At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time programme takes you into some of the deepest questions both disciplines can pose. On the philosophy side you will engage with fundamental questions about the existence of God, the nature of morality, the possibility of objective ethical claims in politics, and the demands justice places on individuals in a globalised world. On the history side you will study the events and movements that continue to shape contemporary life, learning to read primary sources critically and to construct arguments from evidence. The two subjects reinforce each other: historical case studies give philosophical arguments concrete grounding, and philosophical training sharpens the kind of interpretive precision historians need when drawing conclusions from incomplete records. This programme includes a year abroad, broadening your intellectual and personal horizons through study in a different academic and cultural environment. Graduates of philosophy and history are sought after wherever clear reasoning and strong writing are valued: law, public policy, civil service, journalism, higher education, publishing, think tanks, and international organisations. Many students go on to postgraduate study in philosophy, history, or law, and the combination provides strong preparation for conversion courses such as the Graduate Diploma in Law.
