BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science is the clinical discipline that prepares graduates to work as registered paramedics, responding to medical emergencies across a wide range of settings, from road traffic collisions and cardiac arrests to acute mental health crises and serious illness presentations. Paramedics make rapid clinical assessments, provide immediate treatment and decide on the most appropriate care pathways for patients who may be critically ill, working often under pressure and in challenging environments where good clinical judgement can make the difference between life and death. It is a profession that demands both rigorous scientific training and the personal qualities of calm, resilience and care. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year, full-time programme leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a paramedic, the qualification required to practise in the UK. You will study the biological and clinical sciences underpinning emergency care, including anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathophysiology, alongside the clinical assessment skills, procedural competencies and clinical decision-making frameworks that paramedic practice demands. Practice placements with the ambulance service and other clinical settings are a substantial and essential part of the programme, giving you direct patient contact and supervised clinical experience across the full range of presentations that paramedics encounter. Graduates register as paramedics with the Health and Care Professions Council and pursue careers with NHS ambulance trusts, air ambulance services, the armed forces medical services, event medicine, private ambulance services and in roles extending into critical care, clinical education and paramedicine research. With experience, paramedics can develop into specialist and advanced practice roles, clinical management and leadership. Some graduates also continue to postgraduate study in clinical practice, healthcare leadership or a related health science field.
