BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science is the study and practice of urgent and emergency healthcare delivered outside hospital, in the moments when rapid, skilled assessment and intervention can make the difference between life and death. Paramedics work in some of the most demanding and unpredictable clinical environments in healthcare, drawing on deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology alongside the procedural skills to act decisively under pressure. At the University of Suffolk, this three-year full-time programme prepares you to become a highly competent registered paramedic, ready for the out-of-hospital environment. You will develop the clinical knowledge and practical confidence to recognise, assess and manage a wide range of medical and trauma emergencies, from cardiac arrest and stroke to respiratory distress and obstetric emergencies. The programme equips you to respond and adapt as healthcare practice evolves, maintaining the professional knowledge and clinical standards required throughout a career in paramedicine. The programme balances academic and clinical learning. You will study the science that underpins pre-hospital care, learning to apply evidence-based practice in real situations. Simulation, skills laboratories and supervised clinical placements are central to how you develop, giving you experience of the environments and demands you will face as a qualified practitioner. Communication, ethical reasoning, safeguarding awareness and the ability to make sound decisions under stress are all developed alongside clinical competence. Upon graduating and registering with the Health and Care Professions Council, you will be eligible to work as a paramedic in the NHS, the independent sector, the armed forces, events medicine and a range of other settings. Career development can lead to specialist and advanced practice roles, team leadership, education and research. Some graduates go on to further study in pre-hospital care, emergency medicine or healthcare management.
