BSc Paramedic Science
About this course
Paramedic science prepares graduates for one of the most demanding and rewarding roles in the healthcare system, that of the paramedic who responds to medical emergencies in the community, provides pre-hospital assessment and treatment, and makes critical decisions in high-pressure situations with limited resources and information. The discipline combines clinical knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and pathology with the practical skills of emergency assessment, treatment, and transportation, and with the professional and ethical frameworks that guide practice in a complex and often emotionally challenging role. At the University of East Anglia, this three-year full-time programme is designed to prepare you to register as a paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council upon graduation. You will study the scientific foundations of clinical practice alongside the specific knowledge and skills of paramedic care, including airway management, cardiac care, trauma, obstetrics, and the recognition and management of a wide range of medical conditions. Clinical placements are integral to the programme, taking you into operational ambulance environments and other healthcare settings where you practise your skills under supervision and develop the clinical judgement and professional confidence that paramedic practice demands. Graduates who achieve registration go on to work as paramedics in NHS ambulance services, the military, private healthcare, air ambulance services, and event medicine. The paramedic profession has undergone significant expansion in its clinical scope in recent years, and experienced paramedics increasingly specialise in areas such as critical care, urgent care in general practice, and advanced clinical practice. Postgraduate study leading to specialist or advanced practitioner qualifications is a well-established pathway for paramedics seeking to develop their clinical expertise further.
