About this course

Paramedic science is the discipline concerned with providing emergency and urgent pre-hospital care to patients in the community, often in high-pressure and unpredictable circumstances. A paramedic must combine deep clinical knowledge with the ability to make rapid, sound decisions under stress, working both independently and as part of a wider healthcare team. The scope of paramedic practice has expanded considerably in recent decades, with paramedics now taking on roles in urgent care, clinical assessment, primary care settings and specialist retrieval teams, making the degree relevant to a wider range of healthcare careers than the traditional emergency ambulance setting might suggest. At Birmingham City University this three-year, full-time programme develops your theoretical knowledge and practical skills across both university and clinical practice environments. You will study anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical assessment and treatment, as well as the professional and ethical dimensions of paramedic practice. Clinical placements are central to the programme, placing you in real emergency and healthcare settings where you develop the competence and confidence that the role demands. The programme is designed to develop your ability to overcome challenges, show initiative and apply critical thinking under pressure. Graduates register with the Health and Care Professions Council as paramedics, which opens the way to employment with NHS ambulance trusts and a growing range of other employers including independent ambulance services, air ambulance charities, offshore and remote emergency services, and armed forces medical units. Many paramedics develop specialist skills in areas such as critical care, mental health, primary care or community paramedicine. Postgraduate study offers routes into advanced clinical practice, research, education or leadership, and the growing recognition of the paramedic role within the wider health system means career development opportunities continue to expand.
