Paramedic science and out of hospital care prepares you for one of the most demanding and rewarding roles in healthcare, working at the frontline of the NHS and in the broader urgent and emergency care system. Paramedics respond to medical emergencies in the community, providing assessment, diagnosis, and treatment at the point of need, often in environments where hospital resources are unavailable. The discipline draws on pathophysiology, pharmacology, clinical skills, and professional judgement, all applied under pressure and with real consequences for patients. At the University of Sunderland, this three-year degree equips you with the knowledge, skills, and professional values needed to register with the Health and Care Professions Council as a paramedic. You will study the pathophysiology of the conditions you are likely to encounter in practice, from cardiac and respiratory emergencies to trauma, neurological events, and mental health crises. Clinical skills training covers patient assessment, airway management, medication administration, and a range of procedural competencies. Alongside academic study, you will undertake supervised clinical placements with ambulance services and in out-of-hospital care settings, putting your learning directly into practice. The programme develops not only your clinical ability but also your capacity to make sound professional judgements, communicate with patients and their families, and work within multi-agency teams in the community. Most graduates move directly into employment as registered paramedics with NHS ambulance trusts or independent medical providers. The scope of paramedic practice has grown significantly, and experienced paramedics can develop into specialist and advanced clinical roles, including critical care paramedic, urgent care practitioner, and clinical team leader positions. The degree also provides a strong foundation for those who go on to further study in advanced clinical practice, healthcare leadership, or the transition into nursing, medicine, or other allied health professions.
