Optometry is the healthcare discipline concerned with the examination, diagnosis, and management of conditions affecting the eyes and visual system. It sits at the intersection of clinical science and patient care, combining precise measurement with a thorough understanding of anatomy, optics, and pharmacology. Optometrists are primary eye care practitioners, often the first point of contact for patients experiencing visual problems or eye disease, and their work ranges from prescribing corrective lenses to detecting early signs of systemic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Studying optometry at the University of the West of England, Bristol, you will develop a rigorous grounding in the science of vision. You will explore the optics of the eye, the neuroscience of visual processing, and the clinical techniques used to assess visual acuity and detect ocular pathology. The programme develops your ability to integrate detailed scientific knowledge with compassionate, patient-centred practice. Optometry graduates are well placed to register with the General Optical Council and practise as optometrists in community optical practices, hospitals, and specialist clinics. Many graduates go on to develop expertise in areas such as paediatric vision, contact lens practice, low vision rehabilitation, or hospital-based eye care. The profession also offers routes into academic research, clinical education, and industry roles with optical manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies. Further postgraduate study, including specialist qualifications and higher degrees in vision science or clinical optometry, is a natural next step for those wishing to deepen their expertise or move into research.
