MoOth Occupational Therapy
About this course
Occupational therapy is the health profession concerned with enabling people to participate in the activities, or occupations, that give their lives purpose and meaning. When illness, injury, disability or age impairs someone's ability to manage everyday tasks, occupational therapists assess the barriers they face and work with them to develop strategies, adaptations and skills that restore or maintain their participation in daily life. It is a client-centred profession that works across physical and mental health, children's services, learning disability, older adult care and many other settings. At Robert Gordon University, this four-year full-time Master of Occupational Therapy is a postgraduate-level professional qualification that prepares you thoroughly for practice. You will learn to engage with individuals, groups and communities, using occupational therapy's distinctive approach to understand how meaningful activity connects to health and wellbeing, and to design and deliver interventions that address occupational challenges. The programme develops your clinical reasoning, assessment skills, therapeutic relationship building and knowledge of the conditions and contexts that occupational therapists encounter. You will gain substantial practice experience in a range of settings, developing the professional competence and confidence that safe, effective practice requires. Successful completion of the programme leads to registration with the Health and Care Professions Council, which is required to practise as an occupational therapist in the UK. Graduates work in NHS trusts, social services, independent sector providers, schools, housing organisations and voluntary bodies, often as part of multidisciplinary teams. Many go on to specialise and develop expertise in specific clinical areas, and career progression into senior practice, management, education and research is well established. Occupational therapy is a highly rewarding career with strong and growing demand across health and social care.
