About this course

Adult nursing is the largest field within the nursing profession, placing registered nurses at the centre of healthcare delivery across an extraordinary range of settings and patient populations. Adult nurses work with people from late adolescence through to old age, in environments ranging from acute surgical and medical wards and critical care units to community nursing, GP practices, mental health liaison, and long-term condition management. The role combines clinical precision with the human qualities of empathy, communication and resilience that sustaining effective therapeutic relationships over time demands. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and leads to eligibility to register as an adult nurse. A foundation year is available for students who benefit from additional preparation before engaging with the full nursing degree curriculum. You will study the biological sciences that underpin clinical nursing, including anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, alongside the principles of evidence-based practice, clinical assessment, person-centred care, safeguarding, and the legal and ethical dimensions of professional nursing. Substantial practice placement hours across NHS and other healthcare settings are central to the programme, developing the clinical skills and professional confidence that registration requires. Sheffield Hallam's strong relationships with NHS trusts across South Yorkshire and the Humber ensure a wide range of placement environments. NMC-registered adult nurses work across the NHS and in independent healthcare, with strong demand for qualified nurses throughout the system. Clinical specialisation is a common pathway, with opportunities in areas such as critical care, oncology, cardiology, diabetes nursing, and older people's services. Community, district, and practice nursing are also well-established routes. Management, education, research, and advanced clinical practice are longer-term career pathways that many nurses pursue with postgraduate study and experience.
