BSc Nursing (Adult Health)
About this course
Adult health nursing is concerned with the care of adults across the full spectrum of health conditions, from acute illness and surgical recovery to the management of long-term conditions, rehabilitation, and end-of-life care. It is a profession that requires both scientific knowledge of the human body and its diseases and the interpersonal and communicative skills to support patients and their families through often difficult and frightening experiences. Nurses are central to the delivery of healthcare, working in hospitals, community settings, care homes, and the full range of environments where adults need support. At Plymouth you will study this programme part time, which allows you to balance your studies with other commitments. This flexibility makes the programme particularly suitable for those who are already working in healthcare support roles and who wish to progress to full registration as a nurse while continuing to earn. Across the programme you will develop the clinical knowledge, professional skills, and ethical grounding required for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as an adult nurse. You will study anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, evidence-based practice, nursing assessment, and the professional and legal frameworks governing nursing, alongside substantial practice placement experience in a range of adult health settings. Registered adult nurses are in sustained demand across the NHS, independent healthcare providers, and care organisations throughout the UK. Career paths include ward nursing, community nursing, specialist clinical roles in areas such as cardiology, oncology, neurology, and respiratory care, and leadership and management roles. Many nurses pursue post-registration qualifications to specialise or to develop into advanced nurse practitioner or nurse consultant roles. The part-time route at Plymouth is particularly valued by those who enter the profession as mature students with relevant healthcare experience.
