About this course
Neuroscience is the scientific study of the nervous system, from the molecular and cellular mechanisms of individual neurons to the large-scale organisation of the brain and its relationship to behaviour, cognition and experience. It is one of the most rapidly advancing areas of modern science, with implications for our understanding of consciousness, memory, perception, emotion and mental illness, as well as for the development of treatments for neurological conditions ranging from Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's to epilepsy, stroke and depression. Few fields of inquiry engage as directly with the questions of what it means to be human. At University College London you will study in one of the world's leading neuroscience research environments, a setting in which the scientific community is actively producing the discoveries that define the field you are entering. The programme covers the cellular and molecular biology of the nervous system, synaptic transmission, neural circuits, sensory and motor systems, development and plasticity, cognitive neuroscience and the neuroscience of disease. You will develop laboratory and data analysis skills, and you will engage with the computational and mathematical approaches that modern neuroscience increasingly requires. UCL's exceptional research facilities and the depth of its faculty expertise provide an unusually stimulating environment for a degree that is already one of the most intellectually demanding in the biological sciences. Neuroscience graduates go on to careers in academic and industrial research, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical research organisations, the NHS, science policy, science communication and technology companies working on brain-computer interfaces and related areas. Many continue to doctoral research, which is the typical route into academic neuroscience and research careers in the life sciences industry. The degree also provides strong preparation for graduate entry into medicine and for clinical careers in neurology and psychiatry.
