About this course

Music and Scottish literature is a combination that brings together the academic study of music in all its dimensions with a deep engagement with one of the richest literary traditions in these islands. Music encompasses the technical, historical, cultural and philosophical questions the art form raises, from the analysis of musical structure and the history of genres to the social meanings of sound and the philosophy of aesthetic experience. Scottish literature spans a tradition from the medieval makars through Burns, Scott, Stevenson and MacDiarmid to the vibrant contemporary literary culture of a nation with a distinctive and complex relationship to language, identity and history. At the University of Glasgow this part-time programme allows you to explore music and Scottish literature in depth while managing other commitments. You will develop both disciplines through sustained engagement with their critical and creative dimensions, and the programme includes a year abroad, which broadens your academic perspective and may offer opportunities to explore how Scottish culture is received and understood internationally. The curriculum in music gives you options across technical, historical and cultural areas, while Scottish literature allows you to explore the full range of the tradition from Gaelic and Scots through to contemporary writing in English. Graduates of music and Scottish literature degrees go on to careers in arts administration, education, journalism, broadcasting, heritage and cultural organisations, community arts, performance and the creative industries. The research, critical analysis and communication skills both disciplines develop are valued across a wide range of professional contexts. Postgraduate study in music, Scottish literature, cultural studies or related disciplines is a natural further route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or academic careers.
