BA Musical Theatre
About this course
Musical theatre is a performing arts form that integrates singing, acting, and dance into a single unified storytelling experience. It demands versatility from its performers: you must be able to convey character and emotion through voice, body, and spoken word simultaneously, often under demanding physical and technical conditions. The tradition extends from classic Broadway and West End shows through to contemporary physical theatre, new writing, and experimental work that pushes the form in new directions. Training in musical theatre is intensive and holistic, covering the full range of performance skills alongside music theory, movement, and the history of the form. At the University of Bedfordshire, this three-year, full-time programme develops your performance skills through studio work, workshops, and productions that allow you to work across the range of musical theatre styles. You will study singing technique including voice production, style, and interpretation, dance across genres including jazz, tap, contemporary, and ballroom, and acting technique including text analysis, character development, and physical performance. Music theory and aural training support your vocal work, and you will study the history of musical theatre from its origins through to contemporary practice. The programme culminates in professional productions that give you the experience of working at a high standard in front of an audience, with all the preparation and discipline that requires. Graduates from musical theatre programmes pursue careers as performers in professional theatre, touring productions, cruise ships, television, and film. Many also work in education, running workshops and teaching performance skills in schools and youth theatre companies. Others move into directing, choreography, casting, production management, and arts administration. The work ethic, resilience, and collaborative skills that performing arts training develops are valued well beyond the stage itself, and some graduates build careers in areas such as corporate training, presentation skills coaching, and community arts.
