BA Music Production
About this course
Music production is the craft and science of capturing, shaping, and presenting sound in recorded form. It encompasses the skills of the producer, who works with artists to develop recordings and shape the sound of a project, the audio engineer, who handles the technical aspects of recording and mixing, and the sound designer, who creates and manipulates audio for film, television, games, and other media. The discipline sits at the intersection of technical knowledge and creative sensibility, requiring you to understand how sound behaves and how to control it, while also having the musical and aesthetic judgment to make decisions about what sounds right. At Nottingham Trent University this three-year full-time degree develops your practical skills in a professional studio environment alongside your theoretical understanding of acoustics, music technology, and the music industry. You will work with industry-standard digital audio workstations, recording equipment, and mixing tools, and you will have the opportunity to record and produce a range of musical styles and contexts. NTU's industry connections and its strong track record in creative arts education support a curriculum that is closely aligned with what the music production industry actually requires of new entrants. Music production graduates work across a wide range of audio and music industry roles. Some work as producers or engineers in commercial recording studios, working with artists across genres. Others move into post-production for film, television, and games, where skills in sound design and mixing are in growing demand. Live sound engineering, broadcast audio, music publishing, and artist management are further destinations. Many graduates work freelance, building careers through a combination of production work, engineering, and music creation. Postgraduate study in music technology, audio production, or sound design is available for those who want to develop further expertise or pursue a research dimension to their practice.
