BMus Music Composition
About this course
Music composition is the discipline of creating original musical works, encompassing everything from the initial idea or concept through the crafting of harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic material to the final score or recorded work. It is a practice that demands both deep technical knowledge, including harmony, counterpoint, orchestration, and form, and genuine creative vision: the ability to find and develop ideas that are distinctively your own and to shape them into works that communicate something to listeners. In the contemporary landscape, composition extends across acoustic, electronic, and hybrid forms, and into applied areas such as film, games, and installation. At Birmingham City University, this four-year, full-time programme is delivered through the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, one of the UK's leading conservatoires, which provides an environment in which you are surrounded by students with serious musical aspirations across all disciplines. The conservatoire context gives you the opportunity to collaborate with performers and other musicians, to hear your work realised by skilled players, and to build the professional networks and friendships that matter throughout a creative career. Being part of Birmingham City University's wider arts, design, and media faculty also opens access to work in areas such as video game and film soundtracks and art installations, broadening the range of compositional contexts you can explore. A typical entry tariff of 136 points reflects the competitive and artistically demanding nature of the programme. Graduates from music composition programmes go on to careers as composers for concert, theatre, film, television, games, and installation; as music producers, editors, and sound designers; as music educators and lecturers; and in music publishing and arts administration. The combination of creative practice, technical skill, and collaborative experience developed at a conservatoire is recognised and valued across the full breadth of the music and creative industries. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in composition or music technology, or pursue portfolio careers combining composition with teaching and other professional work.
