BA Music
About this course
Music is one of the oldest and most universal human activities, encompassing the composition of sound in time, the performance of that sound, and the cultural contexts in which it is created and received. Studying music at degree level means engaging with all of these dimensions, from the technical craft of making music to the ideas, histories, and social forces that give it meaning. At Brunel University London, the BA Music programme has been designed to develop your particular interests in music-making, aiming to equip you with a solid grounding in the craft of creativity that reflects the diversity of musical styles and genres in today's world. Over three years of full-time study, you will explore areas including composition, performance, music technology, and critical musicology. You will develop practical skills alongside analytical and theoretical ones, learning to listen closely, think creatively, and communicate ideas about sound in writing and in studio or rehearsal settings. The programme encourages you to work across genres rather than in a single tradition, so whether your interests lie in classical composition, electronic music, jazz, or contemporary popular forms, you will find space to pursue and refine your own artistic voice. Typical entry is at around 104 UCAS tariff points. The careers open to music graduates are broad. Performance, composition, music production, arts administration, music journalism, education, and the rapidly growing creative technology sector all draw on the skills this degree develops. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study, whether in performance, musicology, music education, or creative practice. Whatever direction you take, the ability to think creatively and work collaboratively that music develops is valued across a wide range of professional contexts.
