BMus Music and Sound Recording
About this course
Music and sound recording is a degree that takes seriously both the artistic and the technical dimensions of music-making and audio production. Music study develops your understanding of musical composition, performance, history, and theory, situating your listening and practice within the broader contexts of musical culture and tradition. Sound recording addresses the technical craft of capturing, processing, and reproducing audio, encompassing studio recording, mixing, mastering, and the technology of audio systems. Together they develop practitioners who are musically informed and technically skilled, capable of working across the full spectrum of music production and audio engineering. At the University of Surrey this four-year full-time programme is taught at an institution with a strong reputation in music and audio engineering, and it integrates AI into its courses as part of a deliberate commitment to building digital skills and the creative confidence that employers and the industry value in graduates. The degree includes a year abroad, broadening your musical and technical perspective in an international context. You will develop your musical knowledge and practice alongside studio engineering skills, acoustics, sound design, and music technology, working in professional production facilities. The typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the musical and technical standard expected on entry. You will develop musicianship, technical audio engineering skills, and the critical and contextual understanding that professional music practice demands. Graduates pursue careers as music producers, recording engineers, sound designers, composers, music technology specialists, and audio content creators. Many work across several of these areas. Postgraduate study in music, music technology, or sonic arts is a natural next step for those wanting to specialise further.
