BA Music and Music Technology
About this course
Music and music technology together represent the full spectrum of what contemporary musical life requires: the artistic depth and historical knowledge that comes from serious musical study, and the technical understanding of sound, recording, and production that has transformed how music is made, distributed, and experienced. The two reinforce each other in ways that are increasingly valuable to musicians and to the industries that surround them. At the University of Leeds, this three-year, full-time BA gives you the opportunity to develop both strands in depth while also pursuing other areas of musical interest. You will study music history, analysis, composition, and performance alongside the principles and practice of music technology, including recording, sound design, digital audio, and production. The programme is built around the understanding that musicians working in any area today benefit from technical fluency, and that technologists working in music benefit from genuine musical understanding. A sandwich year is available, giving you the chance to spend a year in a relevant professional context before completing your degree. A year abroad option and work placement opportunities are also integrated, broadening your experience and professional network during your studies. Leeds is a city with a strong and diverse music scene, and the university's connections to recording studios, venues, and festivals enrich the learning environment. Graduates from music and music technology programmes go on to careers as musicians, producers, sound engineers, composers, music supervisors, educators, arts administrators, and music journalists, among many other roles. Others work in the technology sector, developing audio software and systems, or in the gaming and film industries, where sound design is central. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in music, music technology, composition, or performance.
