About this course

Music and Music Production together address two different but complementary dimensions of the musical world: the study and performance of music as an artistic and intellectual tradition, and the craft of capturing, shaping and presenting sound in recorded and produced form. Studying them together gives you both the musical depth to understand what you are working with and the technical fluency to translate musical ideas into finished audio. In an industry where the boundaries between composer, performer and producer are increasingly blurred, this combination is a genuinely practical preparation for the realities of working in music. At Liverpool Hope University, this three-year full-time degree places you in a city with one of the richest musical histories in the world. Liverpool's culture of popular music, its tradition of orchestral and classical performance, and its thriving contemporary scene across jazz, electronic, folk and experimental genres all form part of the context within which you will study. You will engage with music history, theory, analysis and performance alongside the technical and creative skills of production, including recording techniques, mixing, sound design, and the use of digital audio tools. The programme includes a sandwich year and a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience in the music industry and to encounter musical cultures in a different country. Work placement is also built in, supporting your transition into professional life. Graduates of Music and Music Production degrees move into a wide range of roles across the music industry and creative sector. These include studio engineering and production, artist management, music education, arts administration, broadcasting, music publishing, and composition for media including film, television and games. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in music production, composition, ethnomusicology or music education, or develop portfolio careers that combine performance, teaching and production work.
