About this course

Multimedia journalism is journalism for the world as it actually exists today: a media landscape in which news and information reach audiences through television, radio, print, websites, podcasts, social media, and live streaming, often simultaneously. A journalist who can work fluently across these platforms, who can produce a video package, write a news story, record and edit audio, and manage a social media presence, is far more versatile and employable than one trained in a single medium. Multimedia journalism degrees respond directly to this reality, combining practical training across formats with the editorial judgement and academic grounding in media that professional journalism requires. At the University of Northampton, the BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism is offered on a part-time basis, making it accessible to students who are working in or around the media while they study. The programme combines practical training in radio, television, newspaper, magazine, and online journalism with academic study of media, journalism ethics, and the political and social context in which journalism operates. The practical emphasis means you will graduate with a portfolio of real work across multiple platforms, which is what employers and editors want to see from new journalists. Multimedia journalism graduates work across the full range of media organisations. Newspapers, magazines, broadcasters, digital news outlets, and community media all employ journalists with cross-platform skills. Public relations, communications, and content production roles in commercial and public sector organisations are further destinations for graduates whose skills extend beyond traditional newsrooms. The investigative, research, writing, and communication abilities that journalism training develops are also valued in policy, advocacy, education, and media management. For those who want to deepen their expertise, postgraduate study in journalism, media, or communications is available at a number of institutions.
