Translation is both a practical skill and a profound intellectual activity. At degree level, the study of modern languages with a specialism in translation asks you to become genuinely proficient in at least two languages, to understand the structures and pragmatics of each, and to develop the judgement, knowledge, and craft needed to render meaning accurately and appropriately from one language to another. Translation theory examines what translation is, what it involves, and what is inevitably lost, gained, or transformed in the process, making it a discipline that touches on linguistics, philosophy, and cultural studies. At the University of Essex, this four-year full-time programme combines advanced modern language study with a focus on translation practice and theory. You will develop high-level skills in your chosen languages, studying grammar, vocabulary, register, and idiomatic usage alongside the literary, cultural, and historical knowledge needed to translate confidently across a range of text types, from legal and technical documents to literary fiction and journalism. Translation projects are central throughout, giving you sustained practice in moving between languages with precision and sensitivity. You will also engage with the growing field of computer-assisted translation and localisation, which is transforming professional translation practice. Graduates in modern languages with a translation focus go on to work as translators, interpreters, localisation specialists, language teachers, editors, content writers, and language service managers. The combination of linguistic precision, cultural knowledge, and attention to detail the degree develops is valued across international business, the public sector, publishing, legal services, and international organisations.
