BA Modern Languages
About this course
Modern languages is a discipline that gives you direct access to other cultures, histories, and ways of thinking, through the languages in which they express themselves. Language learning at university level goes far beyond the practical ability to communicate in another tongue: it involves the close reading of literature, the analysis of linguistic structure, engagement with film, cultural history, and contemporary society, and the development of a nuanced appreciation of how language and identity are intertwined. Modern languages graduates are among the most culturally aware and analytically versatile of any discipline. At Leicester this four-year full-time programme with a foundation year gives you a supported entry route into modern languages study, providing additional preparation before you progress to the full degree. You will develop language skills to a high level through a combination of grammar, written composition, oral practice, and immersive engagement with the cultures associated with your chosen language or languages. The foundation year ensures that students from a range of educational backgrounds can access a degree that requires sustained, dedicated linguistic effort. As you advance through the programme you will engage with literature, film, cultural history, and contemporary issues in your chosen language, building a rich understanding that extends well beyond linguistic competence. Modern languages graduates go on to careers in translation and interpreting, diplomacy, international business, journalism, education, the civil service, international organisations, and a wide range of roles where cross-cultural competence and linguistic skill are valued. The analytical and communicative abilities the degree develops are transferable across many sectors, and many graduates find that their language skills are the distinctive element that makes them stand out to employers with international operations. Many also continue to postgraduate study in languages, area studies, translation, or related disciplines.
