About this course
Modern languages combined with international relations is one of the most coherent and professionally powerful degree combinations available. International relations examines the structures, processes, and ideas that govern how states and other actors interact across borders, covering diplomacy, security, global governance, trade, and the politics of development and conflict. Studying it alongside Persian and Russian gives you direct linguistic access to two of the most strategically significant language communities in the world, both carrying deep literary and cultural traditions alongside their contemporary geopolitical importance. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year MA (Hons) programme develops both Persian and Russian to a high level of proficiency while giving you a rigorous grounding in international relations theory and contemporary global affairs. You will develop linguistic skills in two demanding and rewarding languages alongside the analytical frameworks of international relations, learning to combine direct access to primary sources with sophisticated understanding of the political contexts in which those languages operate. A year abroad is built into the programme, providing immersive language study and international academic experience that deepens both your linguistic and your political understanding. Graduates from this combination are exceptionally well positioned for careers in the diplomatic and foreign services, international organisations, security and intelligence agencies, journalism, international development, and think tanks focused on Central Asia, the Middle East, Russia, or international security. The combination of Persian and Russian with a strong analytical framework is rare and genuinely valued in competitive professional environments. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in international relations, area studies, security studies, or translation, deepening their expertise for academic or specialist professional roles.
