Studying three languages at degree level, Italian, Spanish and Greek, is an ambitious and intellectually demanding undertaking that develops genuine multilingual competence alongside the comparative cultural and literary understanding that studying across these traditions provides. Italian opens one of Europe's great literary and artistic cultures; Spanish gives access to a language spoken by hundreds of millions of people across two continents; and Greek, in this context most likely modern Greek, connects you to the Hellenic world and its ancient and modern traditions. Together the three represent some of the most culturally significant strands in Mediterranean and European civilisation. This four-year full-time degree at the University of St Andrews includes a year abroad, which is an essential component of achieving the high level of linguistic proficiency that studying three languages demands. You will develop your skills in Italian and Spanish to advanced levels, engaging with literature, culture, history, politics and film in both languages, while pursuing Greek studies alongside them. The degree asks you to move between linguistic and cultural traditions, developing comparative awareness and the kind of intellectual flexibility that genuine multilingualism cultivates.
