MA Modern Languages (German and Spanish) and English
About this course
Studying two modern languages alongside English literature and language is one of the most intellectually ambitious routes a humanities student can take. It places you simultaneously within three distinct linguistic and cultural traditions, developing not just communicative ability but a highly refined sensitivity to how language shapes meaning, how literary traditions reflect and construct cultural identity, and how the same ideas look different when approached through different linguistic lenses. German, Spanish, and English together span an extraordinary range of literature, history, and cultural production, from the German philosophical and literary tradition to the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world and the anglophone canon. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time programme develops your proficiency in German and Spanish to a high level while also engaging deeply with English literature and linguistics. You will study the rich cultural heritage of the German-speaking lands, the history and literature of Spain and Latin America, and the English literary tradition, across a carefully designed curriculum that allows you to follow your own intellectual interests within each discipline. The programme includes a year abroad, which is essential for developing the genuine fluency and cultural immersion that make language learning at this level meaningful. The typical entry tariff of 200 points reflects the academic rigour of the programme. Graduates of trilingual degree programmes are among the most versatile arts graduates in the job market. Career destinations include translation and interpreting, publishing, journalism, international business, law, diplomacy, education, the civil service, and the cultural industries. The combination of literary depth and multilingual ability is particularly valued in roles that require sophisticated communication across cultural boundaries. Postgraduate study in linguistics, comparative literature, translation studies, or area studies is also a common and natural progression.
