MA Modern Languages (French and German) and Greek
About this course
Combining French, German, and Greek in a single degree is an ambitious intellectual undertaking that rewards the effort with a remarkable breadth of cultural and linguistic understanding. French and German are the two most studied languages in European higher education and the languages of some of the richest literary, philosophical, and political traditions in the modern world. Ancient and modern Greek connects those traditions to the classical foundations of Western civilisation, and the study of Greek, whether ancient or modern, opens a window onto the literature, philosophy, and history that shaped Europe's self-understanding. At the University of St Andrews, this four-year full-time MA (Hons) programme develops your proficiency in French and German to a high level through the study of language, literature, and culture, while also giving you a grounding in Greek. The programme includes a year abroad, which gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in one or more of the relevant language communities, developing your fluency and cultural sensitivity in an authentic setting. You will study the full range of linguistic skills alongside substantial engagement with literary and cultural texts, developing the critical and interpretive abilities that language study at this level demands. The three-language combination also develops a powerful meta-linguistic awareness, an understanding of how languages work, how they relate to each other, and what they reveal about the societies that use them. Graduates from modern languages programmes are highly valued across a wide range of sectors. Careers in translation, interpreting, diplomacy, international business, publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, and cultural organisations are all natural destinations. The combination of three languages, particularly one classical and two major European languages, is a distinctive asset in competitive graduate labour markets. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in linguistics, area studies, classics, or translation.
