About this course

Modern languages, communication and cultures at Heriot-Watt is a programme designed for students who want to develop a modern language from beginner level to a proficient standard while also studying the ways in which language, communication and culture interact in a globalised world. The beginner pathway means you need no prior knowledge of your chosen language, making it accessible to students who are genuinely starting from scratch and want to build a new linguistic capability from the ground up. Communication and cultures as a frame of study examines how meaning is made and transmitted across different media and social contexts, and how cultural difference shapes interpretation and interaction. At Heriot-Watt University this four-year, full-time programme offers the opportunity to choose a modern language and develop it systematically over four years, building strong foundations in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation before advancing to more complex linguistic and cultural engagement. You will study intercultural communication, media, translation theory and the cultures of the regions whose language you are learning, alongside your language study. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad and work placements, giving you extended professional experience in environments where your target language is used and the opportunity to live and study in the relevant linguistic and cultural context. Heriot-Watt's language programmes are nationally recognised for student satisfaction. Graduates of modern languages programmes pursue careers in translation and interpreting, international business, diplomacy and the civil service, education and language teaching, journalism, publishing, NGOs and development organisations, the creative industries and any field with international dimensions. The combination of language skills and communication knowledge is a genuine differentiator in many professional settings. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in languages, translation, intercultural communication or international relations.
