BA Modern Languages and Economics
About this course
Modern languages and economics is a degree that combines linguistic and cultural expertise with the analytical framework of economics, producing graduates who can understand the world economy and operate effectively across different linguistic and cultural environments. Economics is the study of how resources are allocated, how markets behave, and how policy shapes the economic lives of individuals and nations. Modern languages gives you proficiency in one or more foreign languages alongside a deep understanding of the cultures and literatures in which those languages are embedded. Together they are a particularly powerful combination for international careers. At the University of Warwick, you will study two languages, choosing your first from French, German, Italian, or Spanish, and your second from a wider range including Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Portuguese, and others. Alongside your language study, you will develop a thorough grounding in economic theory and quantitative methods, engaging with microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the applied fields that connect economic analysis to real-world questions about trade, development, and policy. The programme runs over four years and includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you extended professional experience in a multilingual or international context. This real-world immersion is essential for developing the fluency, cultural confidence, and professional adaptability that international careers require, and it significantly strengthens your readiness to enter the labour market. Graduates from modern languages and economics degrees are sought after across a wide range of sectors. Common careers include roles in international finance and banking, economic consultancy, trade and investment promotion, international organisations and NGOs, diplomacy, journalism, and business development in multinational companies. The combination of language skills and economic analysis is particularly valuable for roles involving cross-border transactions, policy analysis, and international strategy. Postgraduate study in economics, international business, or a related field is a natural route for those wishing to specialise further.
