BA Modern Language with a Foundation Year
About this course
Modern languages at degree level offer one of the most intellectually and personally rewarding of all academic experiences: the ability to communicate fluently in another language and to engage directly with a culture that has its own distinct literature, history, philosophy, and way of relating to the world. Whether you choose to study French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, or another language, the combination of linguistic competence and cultural knowledge you develop opens doors to international careers, enriches travel and personal relationships, and develops a sensitivity to how language shapes thought that transfers to everything you do. At the University of East Anglia this four-year programme includes a foundation year, which provides a supported and flexible entry point for students who may not have the standard entry requirements, who are returning to education, or who are still deciding where their academic interests lie. The foundation year gives you space to explore and to build the academic skills you need before committing to a specific language track. From the foundation year, you will progress to degree-level language study, developing your chosen language to an advanced level through integrated teaching of speaking, listening, reading, and writing alongside engagement with the literature, culture, and social life of the country or countries where your language is spoken. Modern language graduates work in translation and interpreting, teaching, publishing, international business, the civil service, journalism, the diplomatic service, international organisations, and the cultural sector. The ability to operate professionally in more than one language is a genuine competitive advantage in an increasingly globalised economy, and language graduates are valued across a wide range of sectors. Many go on to postgraduate study in languages, linguistics, translation, or area studies, while others use their language skills as the foundation for careers that take them well beyond the UK.
