About this course

Modern language study at degree level develops not just linguistic fluency but a deep engagement with the culture, literature, history, and ways of thinking that a language carries. Language is not simply a vehicle for communication but a structure that shapes how meaning is made and understood, and learning to operate in a language other than your own changes how you see both that language and your own. At the University of East Anglia this four-year full-time programme allows you to pursue a modern language chosen from the range UEA offers, combining language learning with the study of literature, culture, and society in your chosen linguistic tradition. You will develop your linguistic proficiency through language classes while engaging with texts, films, and cultural and historical study in the context of the language and its speakers. Research and analytical skills are central to the programme, and you will write extensively in both English and your target language. UEA's modern languages programmes benefit from a strong research culture and an interdisciplinary environment in which languages are studied alongside history, literature, and cultural studies in ways that enrich each other. The four-year structure gives you the time to develop genuine depth in both linguistic competence and cultural knowledge. Graduates go on to careers in international business, diplomacy, translation and interpreting, journalism, publishing, education, the civil service, arts organisations, and technology companies with international operations. The combination of linguistic fluency and cultural analytical skills is valued across many professional contexts. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in their language or in related fields such as translation, European studies, area studies, or international relations.
