BN MNurs Adult and Mental Health
About this course
An MNurs degree in Adult and Mental Health nursing is an integrated master's level programme that prepares you to practise as a registered nurse across two distinct but deeply related fields. Adult nursing addresses the care of people with physical health conditions across the lifespan, from acute settings such as emergency and surgical wards to community, rehabilitation, and palliative care. Mental health nursing works with people experiencing conditions such as depression, psychosis, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, and substance misuse. Combining both prepares you to respond to the whole person, which is increasingly recognised as essential in a healthcare system where physical and mental health are deeply intertwined. At the University of Chester, this four-year full-time programme is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, the regulatory body for nursing in the UK. Graduating with registration in both adult and mental health nursing is unusual and particularly valuable in a health system that increasingly recognises the inseparability of the two. You will spend substantial time in clinical placements across both fields, working with real patients under supervised practice from early in the degree. The academic component covers anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, evidence-based practice, therapeutic communication, and the social and ethical dimensions of health and care. Graduating with dual registration as an adult and mental health nurse significantly broadens your employment options. NHS trusts across the country are the largest employer, but private healthcare, the third sector, armed forces nursing, and international healthcare organisations also offer roles. The combination is particularly valued in settings where patients have co-occurring physical and mental health needs, which is to say, in many healthcare environments. Many nurses go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas such as mental health practice, advanced clinical practice, or nursing leadership. The MNurs qualification is also a strong foundation for those considering nursing research.
