Midwifery is the healthcare profession dedicated to supporting women and their families through pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period. Midwives provide continuity of care at one of the most significant transitions in a family's life, combining clinical expertise with deep interpersonal skill, the ability to support normal physiological birth, and the judgment to recognise when medical intervention is needed and to act swiftly and effectively when it is. Midwifery is a profession built on partnership with women, respect for their autonomy, and a commitment to safe, compassionate care in every situation. At the University of Brighton, this three-year full-time programme prepares you for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. You will study the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and birth, the care of women and newborns across the full scope of midwifery practice, pharmacology, mental health in pregnancy and the postnatal period, and the professional and ethical frameworks that guide midwifery. The programme integrates substantial clinical placement experience in NHS maternity settings, ensuring you develop the practical competence needed to care for women and their babies safely and with confidence. Qualifying as a midwife is both a professional achievement and a significant responsibility.
