BSc Midwifery Studies
About this course
Midwifery is a healthcare profession dedicated to supporting women and their families through pregnancy, labour, childbirth, and the early weeks of parenthood. Midwives are autonomous practitioners who provide the primary care for women experiencing normal, healthy pregnancies, while also recognising when complications arise and coordinating with medical colleagues. The role demands both deep clinical knowledge, including physiology, pharmacology, and the management of emergencies, and the communication and interpersonal skills to support women through one of the most significant experiences of their lives in a way that is respectful, compassionate, and empowering. At the University of Huddersfield, this full-time, three-year BSc(Hons) prepares you for registration as a midwife. You will learn how to provide individualised care for the mother and baby throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and the early postnatal period, developing your communication and interpersonal skills alongside the clinical competences that safe and effective practice requires. Teaching combines on-campus theory with clinical skills simulation, allowing you to develop and rehearse clinical techniques in a safe environment before encountering them in practice. Real-world clinical placements are integrated throughout the programme, placing you in genuine midwifery settings where you develop the professional judgement and practical confidence the role demands. The typical entry tariff is 152 UCAS points. Registered midwives work across NHS maternity units, community midwifery teams, birth centres, and independent midwifery practice. The profession is consistently in demand, reflecting the essential role midwives play in maternity services. Career progression leads into specialist roles including consultant midwife, independent midwife, midwifery lecturer, and leadership and management positions within maternity services. Postgraduate study in areas such as specialist practice, leadership, or research provides options for those who wish to develop further.
