BSc Midwifery (Pre-Registration)
About this course
Midwifery is one of the oldest and most important professions in healthcare, supporting women through pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period and providing care to newborns during their first days of life. It demands clinical expertise, excellent communication skills, the capacity to work under pressure, and a deep commitment to the wellbeing of women and their families at one of the most significant moments of their lives. Pre-registration midwifery training leads directly to qualification and registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. At Teesside, this three-year full-time programme develops your knowledge and competence across the full childbirth continuum, from antenatal care and health assessment during pregnancy through labour and birth to postnatal support for mother and baby. You will study the physiology of pregnancy, childbirth, and the neonatal period, alongside the clinical skills needed to assess and respond to women's health and wellbeing, including the ability to identify when complications require escalation or referral. The programme uses an interactive learning environment, including keynote lectures and practical clinical placements, to integrate theoretical knowledge with the realities of midwifery practice. Practice hours in clinical settings are substantial, giving you the supervised hands-on experience that registration requires. Qualified midwives work in NHS hospitals, birth centres, and community settings, supporting women through all stages of the maternity journey. With experience, midwives move into specialist roles in areas such as high-risk obstetrics, neonatal care, and bereavement support, as well as into education, research, and management. The midwifery profession is valued and in sustained demand, and this programme provides the qualification and foundation for a career that is both clinically rigorous and profoundly human.
