About this course

Midwifery is a distinctive health profession with its own knowledge base, scope of practice and philosophical tradition. Midwives provide continuity of care to women and families throughout pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period, working both independently and as part of the wider maternity team. The role combines clinical expertise in normal pregnancy and birth, the ability to identify and respond to complications, and the relational and communication skills to support women through one of the most significant experiences of their lives. At City St George's, University of London, the three-year full-time BSc Midwifery is built around academic study and professional placements in leading London healthcare trusts, which gives you experience of caring for women in one of the most diverse and complex maternity environments in the world. You will study anatomy and physiology relevant to childbearing, pharmacology, evidence-based practice, public health and the social dimensions of maternity care, alongside the clinical skills needed to provide safe and compassionate care. Placements are integrated throughout the programme, and you will work with qualified midwives in a range of clinical settings, building the competence and professional judgement that independent practice requires. City's London location means you will encounter a remarkably diverse patient population, with high rates of maternal morbidity and complex social situations that require skilled, sensitive care. This breadth of experience is excellent preparation for practice anywhere. Graduation leads to eligibility for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, which is required to practise as a midwife in the UK. Midwives work in NHS hospitals, birth centres, the community and increasingly in private maternity settings. Postgraduate study in advanced midwifery practice, education or public health is available for those who want to develop specialist expertise.
