BN Mental Health Nursing
About this course
Mental health nursing is a specialism within the nursing profession that focuses on the care of people experiencing psychological distress and mental illness. It requires practitioners who can combine clinical knowledge with deep empathy, the ability to build therapeutic relationships, and an understanding of the social, biological, and psychological factors that contribute to mental health difficulties. Mental health nurses work with people across the full range of mental health conditions, from anxiety and depression to psychosis, personality disorders, and substance use issues, in a variety of settings that include hospitals, community teams, prisons, and specialist services. At Bangor University this part-time programme prepares you for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a mental health nurse, combining academic study with clinical placements in mental health settings. You will develop your understanding of mental health conditions, evidence-based nursing interventions, pharmacology, risk assessment, and the legal and ethical frameworks that govern mental health care, alongside the communication and therapeutic relationship skills that are central to effective practice. Studying part-time gives you the flexibility to manage other commitments alongside your training, and Bangor's location in North Wales provides placements across both urban and rural mental health services. Mental health nursing graduates work in NHS trusts, independent hospitals, community mental health teams, crisis services, early intervention services, forensic settings, and a wide range of specialist services for children, older adults, and people with complex needs. The qualification leads to NMC registration as a mental health nurse, which is required to practise. Many graduates go on to develop specialist expertise in areas such as psychological therapies, substance misuse, perinatal mental health, or liaison psychiatry. Advanced practice, clinical leadership, research, and postgraduate training in areas such as cognitive-behavioural therapy or family therapy are also common career directions. Demand for qualified mental health nurses is high across the UK.
